Riches

” A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone. ” – Henry David Thoreau

This is such a deep saying…..

Many times we always think that one is rich when we have things and money.

But the issue is not about having possessions.

It is about whether possessions have us…..

Thus, richness on a higher level is truly about contentment.

Being contented with what we have and letting go of what we don’t have.

Such riches requires not a million dollars but a change of mindset!

When she can’t sleep….

I put my kids to sleep every night….and there are times where it is harder for them to fall asleep…

Tonight is one such nights for Donna…

But she did not contend with me.

She simply spent more time talking and asking her ‘why’s….

And as usual, I will tell her about bats and them fluttering at the window so that she will quickly shut her eyes.. (sorry to disappoint you but I do resort to such methods of scare) ๐Ÿ˜›

After half an hour..one hour… she eventually fell asleep in my arms…

She looked so contented that mummy was beside her while she slept…

When I saw her, I feel that all the time and effort in putting her to bed is well worth it…. : )

Roses

” It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses we must plant more trees.” ~ George Eliot

People want roses but they have different expectations of getting them.

Some go on the roadside and hope to find them.

Some decide to steal them from the neighbour’s garden.

Some hope to win a lottery and then with that they can get a garden of roses.

Some choose to wait for the rain of roses to come down (someday).

But those who eventually get the roses are the ones who plant the seeds.

And more than having the roses, they get to smell and enjoy them too! : )

Indifference…..

โ€œThe opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.โ€ ~ Elie Wiesel

Recently, I have been hearing some stories of people being indifferent to the needs of others and I thought being indifferent can be very scary.

Apart from the known news about the little girl in China whom no one lent a helping hand while she laid on the ground bleeding profusely… there are a few other stories I heard that are closer to home.

They are not tragic news but still, I am saddened when I hear of them.

What have we become? Why have we become like that?

Is it in the pursuit of success that we become so self-centred?

I don’t know….

I can only hope that we will slowly regain our awareness that we do not live on this planet alone. There are many other fellow human beings living on the same planet as us, experiencing similar or even worst struggles as us.

Before we turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to someone, think….what if one day, we are in the same predicament?

Black & White

When I was younger, many things are simply black or white. There are only two kinds of people in the world, the good and the bad. If I don’t like vanilla, I would be offered chocolate.

As I grow older, I realised that many things in the world are not black or white. Even people can be half-good, half-no good : P

Thus, I became more reserved in my judgement. Notice how kids like to say ” I don’t like him” – just based on one incident or one impression? But as adults, I have heard many married couple share how their first impression of each other aren’t good.

So what happened to the world? Nothing….

It is just us growing up realising that apart from the colour black and white, there are many other colours around. If you don’t feel like vanilla ice-cream, there is always raspberry or other complicated oops.. I mean sophiscated flavours around.

To look or to overlook?

” Wisdom is learning what to overlook.” ~ William James

Dealing with people is one of the most difficult yet important skill in life. When we are a master in working and dealing with people issues, we will be very successful in life!

Sometimes we meet nasty people. But the more scary ones are those who are pleasant on the outside yet bitter on the inside. When our paths cross and some issues arise, I have learned that sometimes, it is better and wiser to overlook the differences.

When we focus on the issues and the nastiness, we are making a mountain out of a molehill; afterall, such people are just nasty anyway. They are not worth our anger nor energy.

We need to learn what to look into and what to overlook.

Simply put, let’s NOT major on the minor and minor on the major!

Life is bigger than that! : )
